Questions to solve Before using your Airless Paint Sprayer

An airless sprayer is an efficient tool for spray painting large areas quickly. But they aren't as simple as picking one up and pulling the trigger. There are some questions you need to ask yourself before firing up that airless sprayer.

Is Your Sprayer Rated for the Material?

This is job number one. You cannot just assume that any old airless unit can spray any old coating. The characteristics of the coating you plan to spray will dictate nearly every other decision. Is it a thick substance like plaster or drywall mud? A thinner stain or lacquer? Specialty coatings like elastomerics or fire retardants?

The fact is, different paints, stains, and coatings have very different viscosities and levels of thickness. Some are thin like water, while others are almost gel-like. An inexpensive homeowner sprayer might be able to handle lighter stains, but try pushing heavy plaster through it and you're going to struggle.

More importantly, trying to spray cabinet coatings, elastomerics, zinc-based primers or other industrial coatings can damage or even destroy sprayers that aren't designed for them.

So step one is looking at the tech specs for the actual unit you own or are renting. What's the maximum coating thickness it can spray effectively? If the coating doesn't fall within that range, you need a different sprayer, period. Don't try to cheap out on this, an expensive repair or a ruined job will cost way more than upgrading your equipment.

How Large is the Surface Area?

Airless sprayers are fantastic for big jobs like the exterior of a house, buildings, or acres of fencing and wood staining. Their high pressure pumps can spray coatings at a rapid rate, quickly covering large surface areas. But they aren't as well-suited for smaller projects.

So, airless sprayers may be overkill for smaller projects like painting lampshades, railings, or tight spaces. The fan spray can be difficult to control in confined areas. For these cases, an HVLP or low-pressure sprayer is often better.

What is the Shape and Material Surface?

Airless sprayers can coat nearly any surface from metal roofs to brick to wood. But the geometry of the surface makes a big difference in technique. Airless tips spray using a fan pattern, so flat expansive areas are easiest. But surfaces with lots of corners, recesses, or decorative trim demand more precision.

For these areas, I recommend using a smaller tip size to concentrate more of the spray pattern into tight spaces. It may require some masking and the need for 'striping' around edges with brushes or rollers. Non-porous surfaces like metal or tile also require different handling than wood or concrete.

What Environmental Conditions Do I Need to Consider?

With their high-powered pumps, airless sprayers are even more dependent on the coating area being clean and free of dust, debris, or moisture. Any contaminants can get blasted into the paint or stain.

Windier conditions make airless spraying very difficult. The overspray can blow coating everywhere and ruin the finish on surrounding areas. That's why many experts recommend aiming any airless sprayer into the wind and shielding your work surface as much as possible.

Taking the time to properly prepare the surface saves considerable rework cleaning up overspray or fixing areas where the paint didn't adhere properly. Comprehensive masking also protects surrounding rooms, landscaping and belongings from stray overspray particles.
