A Guide to Using Palm Nailers

The palm nailer, also known as palm nail gun, is a pneumatic tool used for driving nails into wood or metal materials. It gets its name from its small size and light weight, allowing it to be held and operated with one hand. Palm nailers are popular among carpenters, roofers, framers, and other construction trades for their portability and ease of use in tight spaces.

Palm nailers are designed to fit in the palm of your hand for comfort and control during use. It gets its name from its small, compact size - usually about 5-7 inches long.  Palm nailers typically use 2 to 4 inches long nails. The nails are loaded into the front side of the nailer and the compressed air line attaches to the back side. When triggered, the nailer uses air pressure, typically 70-100 PSI, to swiftly drive the fastener into the workpiece.

Palm nailers use an air hose connected to a compressor for power. When a nail is installed, pulling the trigger releases a burst of air to fire a single nail. Many palm nailers feature a contact safety tip on the nose. This helps prevent accidental firing until the tip is pressed against an object. Other key features include depth adjustment, selective fire for rapid nailing, and dry fire lockout to prevent firing without a nail loaded.

Palm nailers mainly used for nailing trim and molding. The compact size allows the user to get into tight spaces and corners. Popular for installing baseboard, crown molding, window casings, and door trim. Can also be used for nailing furring strips, paneling, fencing, and other light duty nailing tasks.

For commercial jobs, palm nailers allow installers to quickly fire nails installing Joist hangers and metal connectors. The tool's small size allows it to fit into tight spots and sinks nails in areas a larger nail gun can't reach. Carpenters and remodelers rely on palm nailers for installing trim requiring precision and other overhead nailing, comfortable for ceilings, soffits, rafters. No fatigue from holding arms overhead.

Always inspect your palm nailer thoroughly before use. Make sure all guards and covers are in place and not damaged. Check for any loose, worn, or damaged parts. Ensure the trigger and controls operate smoothly and properly. Double check that no nails are jammed inside.

Most palm nailers load at the very front tip called the nose. Be sure to use the correct nail size and type recommended by the AEROPRO manual. Angle the nailer slightly and insert nails one at a time carefully. Never force nails in, as jamming can occur. Do not overfill the nailer past its capacity.

Hold the palm nailer firmly and place the nose perpendicular against the material you'll be nailing into. Be aware of what's behind and below the surface in case the nail punctures all the way through. Keep hands and body parts away from the discharge area to avoid accidental firing into them.

Look for a trigger lockout mechanism that prevents accidental firing. Palm nailers have a contact safety tip that requires pressing the nose against an object to enable the trigger. Be sure any safety features are working properly before operating the nailer.

When driving a nail, be prepared for recoil forces and noise. Grip the nailer securely yet lightly. Allow the tool to recoil naturally, resisting the urge to stiffen up. Stay focused on keeping the nailer straight and steady through the nailing motion. Practice on scrap material first to get a feel for the recoil.

Inspect the workpiece after driving each nail. Make sure the nail has gone to the correct depth and has not bent or deflected. Look for any cracks, splits, or damage caused to the material. Stop nailing immediately if you see any issues.

If a nail becomes jammed, disconnect air supply and remove all nails before attempting to clear it. Do not use tools or objects that could damage the nailer.  Check for misaligned parts and have repairs done by a qualified technician if needed.
