what is an air Ratchet Wrench used for?

An air ratchet wrench is a specialized tool that allows users to quickly turn bolts and nuts without having to physically ratchet the tool repeatedly. Case-in-point are the fasteners used to affix something like a front sway bar. With some cars, you’ll be under there for a long time manually cranking on a conventional ratchet (even longer with an open end wrench) because of all the threads. An air ratchet makes that tedious job easier, speeding it up which allows more time to invest in more intricate work.

Air ratchet wrenches work by utilizing compressed air to create torque and rotational force. An internal mechanism uses incoming compressed air to continuously turn an output shaft connected to the socket or bit holder. This allows the user to keep their hand stationary on the tool while it does the actual tightening or loosening motion automatically. The speed and direction of the rotation can be controlled with a lever or switch on the tool.

One of the biggest benefits of using an air ratchet wrench is the incredible speed it provides compared to manual hand tools. A high quality air ratchet can achieve up to 250 rpm, whereas a normal manual ratchet may only reach 40-50 rpm in the hands of an experienced technician. This rapid turning motion allows bolts and nuts to be run on or off very quickly, saving significant time especially when working on projects with multiple or difficult to reach fasteners.

Another major advantage of air ratchet wrenches is their high torque capabilities. Many air ratchets can produce over 100 ft-lbs of torque, which is on par with some impact wrenches. This high torque allows an air ratchet to break loose even corroded or over-tightened fasteners with ease. The torque can be regulated on most models to prevent damage to delicate components or fasteners.

product-1-1

Air ratchet wrenches are available in a few common drive sizes: 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2". The drive size determines the maximum bolt or nut size the tool can accommodate. A 1/4" drive air ratchet is best suited for smaller fasteners, while a 1/2" drive will provide more torque and is appropriate for large fasteners like wheel lug nuts or suspension components. A 3/8-inch drive air ratchet works for the majority of light to medium duty tasks on a car. The length of the handle and head shape can also vary between models for improved access in tight spaces.

When it comes to specific uses, air ratchet wrenches excel in automotive applications. They are commonly used for all sorts of repairs and maintenance, from brakes and suspensions to engine rebuilds and transmission work. The speed and access abilities are extremely helpful when trying to remove or install bolts in tight engine compartments. They also minimize hand fatigue that can come from prolonged wrenching.

Many professional automotive techs consider an air ratchet wrench one of their most frequently used tools. They are indispensable for tire shop work as well, allowing lug nuts to be quickly removed and installed during tire changes. The auto racing world has also embraced air ratchet wrenches for their ability to do rapid pit stops.

In manufacturing and fabrication, air ratchet wrenches allow for efficient assembly and disassembly of machinery components. Their ability to quickly run down long threads is advantageous for mills, presses, conveyors, and other industrial equipment with large threaded fasteners. They're also great for production line jobs where the same bolts need to be turned consistently throughout the day.

Construction contractors find air ratchet wrenches helpful for building projects and renovations. They provide speed and torque for structural applications like steel framing, as well as accessibility for working in tight quarters. Contractors who routinely deal with large lag bolts and anchors especially appreciate the efficiency of air ratchets.

Although you can use this tool to assemble and disassemble fasteners of the appropriate type and diameter, you should also follow the following safety precautions:

Do not use ratchet wrenches as a lever or hammer;

Do not apply too much force to the handle. Damaged fasteners are best unscrewed with a standard wrench, that is, without a ratchet;

When working, avoid the head of the wrench slipping on a nut or bolt, for example, as this may damage it;

Clean the wrench with a dry, soft cloth and store the ratchet wrench in a dry location with low humidity (in a tool cabinet or toolbox, for example).
