What You Need Before You Start?

Before you begin painting your car with an LVLP spray gun, there are several materials you'll need to gather. These include:

A properly prepared surface: Before you start painting, make sure the car's surface is clean, dry, and free of any debris or old paint. Use a degreaser to clean the surface, and then sand it lightly to create a smooth finish.

Paint: Use high quality single stage or basecoat clearcoat automotive paint. Make sure to select a color that matches your car's original color or choose a new color that you prefer.

LVLP spray gun: Invest in a high-quality LVLP spray gun designed for car painting. Look for a gun with adjustable air pressure and paint flow controls.

Air compressor: You'll need an air compressor to power the LVLP spray gun. LVLP guns require 4-6 CFM at no more than 10 PSI.

Safety equipment: Wear protective gear such as a mask, gloves, and eye protection when painting.

Paint booth or well-ventilated area: Paint in a well-ventilated area or in a paint booth to prevent overexposure to paint fumes and to contain the paint particles.

Spray the Basecoat Paint

The basecoat provides color for your paint job. For solid colors, you'll need just a basecoat. For metallic colors, you'll apply a subsequent clearcoat. 

Thoroughly stir the basecoat color before straining it into your spray gun. LVLP guns are ideal for basecoats because they atomize paint into a fine mist that helps metallic flakes orient properly. 

Maintain consistent distance and overlap your strokes to ensure even coverage. Apply 2-3 medium wet coats until you achieve your desired color intensity, allowing proper flash time between coats.

Apply the Clearcoat

The clearcoat provides a glossy, protective layer over your basecoat. It's essential when using metallic paints, but also gives an extra layer of UV protection for solid colors. Mix the clearcoat well and strain it into your spray gun. 

Keep your distance closer with clearcoat, around 6 inches from the surface. Apply 2-3 medium wet coats of clearcoat, allowing each coat to flash for 5-10 minutes before applying the next. Not to apply one thick coat, as this can cause drying problems. Allow the clearcoat to cure overnight before wet sanding and buffing.
