How to using a wide crown stapler for lathing?

Lathing is a technique used to create a backing for plaster on walls and ceilings. It involves fastening thin strips of wood, known as laths, horizontally across the wall surface to form a base. Using a wide crown stapler can make the lathing process much faster and easier.

What is a Wide Crown Stapler?

A wide crown stapler, sometimes called a staple gun, is a pneumatic power tool that drives wide-legged staples into thick material like wood. The wide crown helps distribute pressure and resist pull-through. Wide crown staplers are ideal for lathing because they can securely fasten laths made of 1x2 or 1x3 dimensional lumbers.

Why Use a Wide Crown Stapler for Lathing?

The stapler mechanism ensures each staple sits flush with the lath, rather than potentially poking through or being driven at angles.

Holding Strength. The wider staple crown distributes force over more area, giving more holding power than narrow crown staples. This provides a very secure base for plaster and wood.

Neater appearance. The wide crowns provide excellent holding power while sitting nearly invisible atop lath. Hammer imprints are avoided.

Reduced splitting. Wide crown staples are less likely to split lath boards. The staples distribute force over a wider area.

One-step fastening. Staples attach two lath boards with a single fastener. With nails, each board requires its own individual fasteners.

Lathing Step-by-Step with a Wide Crown Stapler

Load the stapler with wide crown staples designed for lath. Use a shorter staple for thinner lath material. Adjust the air pressure on the compressor to 70-90 PSI for best results. Too little pressure leads to inadequate penetration.

Hold the stapler firmly and straight against the lath and framing. Do not angle it.

Place the lath boards with a 1/8" to 1/4" gap between them. The staple crown should span this gap.

Position the stapler crown centered over the lath board gap when driving staples.

Fire a test staple into scrap materials first to check staple penetration and crown setting.

Drive staples every 4 inches along the length of the lath boards. Keep them centered on the width of the lath.

Staple overlapping ends of lath boards at 45 degree angles to reduce chances of them lifting.

Check periodically that staples are fully penetrating into the studs or joists behind the lath.

Be aware of hitting plumbing or wiring hidden behind the lath. Adjust placement to avoid trouble.

On inside and outside wall corners, do not extend lath boards all the way to corner. Keep staples back at least 2 inches.

Other Uses for a Wide Crown Stapler

Securing furring strips. 1x2 and 1x3 furring are applied the same way as lath. Keep the staples centered on the width of the furring strips.

Securing insulation sheets and foam boards to walls and ceilings.

Attaching exterior house wraps and weather barrier membranes.

Fastening overlapping seams on plastic vapor barrier sheeting.

Upholstery. The stapler can securely attach materials to wood frames on upholstery projects.

Affixing rubber or foam baseboard molding around rooms.

Constructing upholstered furniture frames made of plywood or lumber.

Building temporary wood scaffolding, barricades, and safety guardrails.
