6 Best Airless Paint Sprayer Techniques

2023/11/22

Airless paint sprayers are popular tools for both DIYers and professionals due to their ability to quickly cover large surfaces. To get professional-looking results with an airless sprayer requires employing proper spray techniques. Master these fundamental spraying techniques first for spray better every time.

1. Proper Prevent Problems

Before you ever point an airless spray gun at a wall, fence, house, or other surface, make sure you know how to handle the equipment. Read the instruction manual cover to cover, familiarizing yourself with the controls, settings, maintenance guidelines, and safety information. If you have access to in-person training, take a class from a home improvement store, equipment rental facility or professional painter.

When running an airless sprayer, make sure to wear a respirator mask to avoid breathing paint mist. Also wear protective eyewear, gloves, coveralls and non-slip footwear. Protecting yourself safeguards against overspray contacting your eyes or skin and prevents inhalation of vaporized paint particles, which can be harmful.

2. Properly Prepare the Surface

As with any paint job, correctly prepping the surface is crucial when using an airless sprayer. Thoroughly clean the surface of any dirt, grease or loose material. Sand glossy areas to roughen them up so the new paint adheres properly.

Fill any cracks or holes with spackle and sand smooth once dry. Finally, lightly sand the entire surface and remove all dust before painting. Proper prep prevents the paint from chipping or peeling later on.

3. Strain the Paint

Be sure to pour the paint to be sprayed through a paint strainer or filter into the sprayer paint bucket first. This catches any dried globs of old paint, skins or debris that could clog the spray tip while operating.

Clogged tips lead to uneven spray patterns, sputtering and downtime to clean the equipment. Straining the paint prevents this upfront.

4. Adjust the Pressure

One advantage of airless spraying is being able to vary the hydraulic pressure based on the paint viscosity and surface being covered. Heavier bodied paints require higher pressures for proper atomization.

Ensure the sprayer is rated to safely handle the pressure needed for the coating used. Then fine-tune the pressure while test spraying on cardboard until achieving a fan pattern with minimized tailing at the edges.

Using optimized pressure leads to uniform paint coverage without thin spots or excessive overspray.

5. Maintain Proper Spray Distance

Holding the spray gun too close or too far from the surface affects coating quality. Depending on the spray tip recommendations for ideal spray distance.

Typically 12"-15" is optimal for keeping the spray pattern focused while allowing air to help shape the fan. If the gun is too close, paint builds up too heavily and begins to run. If too far, overspray increases while yielding thin coatings.

6. Use Proper Spraying Technique

The motion of the spray gun greatly impacts results. Keep your arm locked using your shoulder and body to move your arm across the area, not just the wrist or elbow. Maintain smooth, parallel passes at even speed, over-lapping half each stroke with the next.

Releasing the trigger at the end of passes prevents paint build up on overlaps. For cutting-in edges, hold the gun perpendicular to spray a vertical fan pattern keeping the edge cleanly defined. Remember these techniques to get uniform coverage with minimized drips and runs in the paint.
