Best Guide to Paint Sprayers for Painting Cabinets

If you want to get rid of outdated kitchen or bathroom cabinets, a coat of fresh paint applied properly with an airless sprayer can help you transform the look of your cabinets in one weekend for a cost far less than replacement.

Choosing an Airless Sprayer for Cabinets

Airless technology is ideal for spraying cabinets because it reduces overspray and provides great control compared to HVLP (high volume, low pressure) spray systems. Modern airless sprayers are also lightweight and maneuverable enough to use easily for cabinet painting.

You’ll also want a model with adjustable pressure output suitable for spraying latex cabinet paints, which are thicker than common house paints. Look for an airless sprayer with at least 0.5 horsepower or 500 watts and with a PSI range reaching a max of 3,000 for the best flexibility. The lowest pressure that provides good atomization is best for control.

Choosing the Right Paint

When selecting paint for cabinets, ensure it offers maximum adhesion, durability and stain resistance. Both oil and water-based cabinet paints work well, but oil-based enamel tends to be more durable. Opt for satin, semi-gloss or high gloss sheens over flat for easier cleaning. Primer helps the paint adhere tightly to cabinet surfaces for added protection. Buy enough in one batch number to complete the entire project to avoid slight color variations between cans.

Complete Prep Work

Proper prep work is crucial for getting great results painting cabinets. Start by removing the doors, drawers and hardware from the cabinets. Remove or mask handles, knobs and hinges to keep paint off these surfaces.

Painting cabinets requires ample ventilation, so work in an area with good airflow. Cover the floors, countertops and any other nearby surfaces with drop cloths to protect from paint mist. Apply painter’s tape around the edges of the cabinet face frames to protect the walls and countertops from overspray.

Applying the Paint

When prepping your airless sprayer, use latex paint or cabinet enamel in a thin, fine consistency as recommended for sprayer use. Pour paint through a paint strainer as you fill the sprayer paint reservoir. Connect all hoses securely. Set the sprayer to appropriate pressure level and prime outside the workspace until any trapped air dispenses and paint flows evenly.

Start spray application 8 inches away from the cabinet frame, moving parallel to it as you spray side-to-side while gently triggering the gun. Maintain consistent speed of motion and distance from surface. Apply thin coats to avoid drips and runs, allowing proper drying time between them. Doors and drawers should be lightly sprayed on both sides for equivalent coverage.

Taking Care of Your Freshly Painted Cabinets

Allow the proper amount of curing time before using cabinets again—usually around 2 weeks. Avoid slamming doors or scuffing surfaces until the paint film has completely hardened. Oils from hands and cleaning chemicals can interact with paint if not fully cured.

Give your cabinets extra care will keep them looking like new for years to come. Using mild dish soap and water for wiping up spills quickly prevents staining. Wax or polish can also add extra protection and sheen on cabinet fronts.
