Improving Transfer Efficiency for Paint Spray Guns

If you run a body shop or routinely spray paint as part of your business, improving transfer efficiency should be valued. Transfer efficiency refers to the percentage of coating that makes it onto the target surface out of the total volume that leaves the paint spray gun. A higher transfer efficiency not only saves material costs but also reduces environmental impact, and clean up time.

 

Choose the Right Nozzle and Needle

 

The nozzle and needle are the end of the spray gun that atomizes the paint and directs the pattern. For maximum efficiency, you’ll need to match these components to the specific coating you’ll be spraying. As a general rule of thumb, larger tip sizes produce thicker coats while smaller tips are better for fine finishes. Make sure to choose a wear-resistant nozzle material like tungsten carbide. You’ll also want to inspect and clean these parts regularly to keep paint from drying out and clogging.

 

Additionally, pay attention to fan width settings which control the angle of atomized paint as it leaves the gun. Wider fan widths are suitable for broad surfaces while narrower settings concentrate paint on small areas.

 

Apply Proper Air Pressure

 

Spray guns operate via compressed air, so calibrating pressure is imperative for good atomization and control. The necessary air pressure varies based on tip size and coating viscosity, for reference, most siphon or gravity feed spray guns output 20-50 psi, high-volume low-pressure (HVLP) models require maximum air pressures around 15 psi.

 

Regardless of spray gun type, use an auxiliary pressure regulator and gauge to fine-tune the air pressure. Start on the low end of the range for your setup and spray a test piece. If the finish seems too thin or rough, bump the PSI up slightly until achieving the desired consistency. Also, periodically check for air leaks throughout the hose which can negatively impact atomization.

Practice Proper Trigger Control

 

How you manipulate the trigger when spraying directly governs how paint is dispersed. Keep a steady back and forth motion across your pass, smoothly pulling and releasing the trigger at the start and end points. Avoid abruptly starting and stopping mid-section which causes paint build up and sags. You'll also want to match trigger operation to your pacing to apply an even wet coat in each pass.  

 

Most common rookie mistakes like holding the trigger down too long, releasing too quickly, or awkward timing while moving stems from lack of practice. Improper trigger manipulation reduces transfer efficiency via bounced paint or heavy coats that drip and run.

 

Choose the Right Paint Viscosity

 

Viscosity refers to a paint's resistance to flow. For spraying, coatings shouldn't be so thick that they leave heavy spots but also can't be too thin causing runs. Thin paints appropriately by adding specific solvents, not just water which evaporates too quickly. Pour coating samples into cups and time how long it takes to empty using stopper rods. Thin in small increments with thorough stirring until reaching target viscosity. Keep in mind environmental factors like humidity and temperature also influence viscosity so account for shop conditions.  

 

Cleaning Between Color Changes

 

Transfer efficiency pertains not only to coating wasted versus applied to surfaces but also precision matching desired colors. Contaminated equipment leads to distorted spray patterns and discolored results requiring rework. When switching between coating colors, thoroughly clean the entire fluid system from tanks to hose, gun, and nozzle.
