How To Properly Use an Airless Paint Sprayer Indoors

Painting the interior of your home can be a hard task, but using an airless paint sprayer can make the job much easier. Airless paint sprayers allow you to apply paint quickly and evenly on walls, ceilings, trim, and doors without the hassle of  rollers. There are some important steps you need to take when using a paint sprayer indoors to ensure you get professional looking results.

Preparing the Room

Completely clear the room you plan to paint. Remove all furniture, wall hangings, outlet covers, and switch plates. Lay drop cloths on the floor and mask off any surfaces you don't want painted like baseboards or windows. Open windows and doors to provide ventilation and cover air vents. Doing this prep work will save you clean up time later.

Select The Right Spray Tips

Airless paint sprayers use various sizes of spray tips that control paint flow rate and spray pattern width. For interior residential painting, fine finish tips around .015-.021 inch are recommended. These produce a lower paint output that allows for finer control and less overspray. Tips on the larger end of the scale are best suited for exterior house painting or painting large commercial spaces.

Mixing and Thinning the Paint

Thoroughly stir the paint before pouring it into the sprayer cup. Most latex indoor paints will need to be thinned slightly with water so they atomize properly through the spray nozzle - usually around 10% is sufficient. Start with 8 ounces of water per gallon of paint and test spray onto cardboard to check consistency. Thin more as needed to prevent clogging, while avoiding over-thinning which can cause dripping.

Adjust The Pressure

One advantage of airless sprayers is you can adjust the paint pressure to suit the job. For interior house painting, lower pressures of 1,500-2,000 PSI are ideal. This provides enough force to atomize the paint properly but minimizes overspray. Start at the lowest pressure when testing your spray pattern and flow rate, then increase as needed. Too much pressure leads to excessive paint misting and wasted paint.

Setting up the Sprayer

Refer to AEROPRO owner’s manual for specific setup instructions. In general, you’ll want to select a narrow spray tip (eg 410 or 310) for indoor use. Tighter tips provide more control so you can avoid spraying windows, trim and ceilings. Start with lower pressure settings - around 1,000 PSI for airless. Adjust pressure as needed for good atomization. Position the sprayer below the area you’ll be painting and work in horizontal back-and-forth motions, overlapping each pass by about 30%. Keep the spray nozzle perpendicular to the wall, about 1 foot away.

Minimize Overspray

Overspray is inevitable to some degree when spray painting, but there are methods to minimize it. In addition to proper spray technique, positioning drop cloths or cardboard as "shadow screens" in areas you don't want painted captures excess paint drips and mist. Turning the air conditioning off avoids catching paint dust in vents. Masking walls, ceilings, floors and any adjacent areas is key. Finally, apply paint in thin, even coats rather than attempting to apply too much paint at once, multiple lighter coats provide better coverage with less mess.

Not all paint sprayers are suitable for indoor use. You’ll want to select one that is lightweight and maneuverable enough to use inside, but still has sufficient power to atomize the paint properly. AEROPRO AP8620/AP8622 airless paint sprayers are good choices for interior painting.
