High pressure spray guns are an important tool for many industries and applications. They allow you to apply fluids and coatings efficiently and with control.

What Are High Pressure Spray Guns?

A high pressure spray gun is a tool that uses compressed air to atomize and propel coating materials onto a surface. It consists of a metal gun body with a trigger, nozzle, and paint cup. Inside the gun body is a needle valve that opens when you pull the trigger, allowing paint to flow. The high pressure air forces the paint through the nozzle in a fine mist.

High pressure spray guns are designed to handle a range of fluid viscosities from thin to thick. They can handle fluids like paints, sealers, coatings, lubricants, and more. The high pressure atomization allows the fluid to fully cover and adhere to surfaces.

Lower pressure guns, like HVLP spray guns, work at pressures around 10 PSI or less. While HVLP guns are good for certain applications, high pressure guns allow you to apply thicker, heavier coatings faster.

Common Uses For A High Pressure Spray Gun

Home Decoration Spraying. The high pressure allows paints to atomize properly so paint adheres well and allow medium to high viscosity.

Applying Primers & Sealers. High pressure gets primers and sealers into every nook and cranny to prevent rust and prepare surfaces for painting.

Staining Decks & Fences. High pressure spray allows thick oil-based stains to break up and penetrate into wood for lasting protection.

Cleaning Engines & Machinery. The high pressure water or solvent spray can blast away grease, oil and dirt from machinery.

Applying Truck Bedliner. Thick truck bedliners need high pressure to properly atomize as they coat pickup truck beds.

How To Use A High Pressure Spray Gun

Connect the air compressor: Ensure the pressure regulator on the compressor is set to the recommended PSI for your spray gun and paint. Attach the air hose to the gun's inlet, ensuring a secure connection.

Fill the paint cup: Gravity-fed guns have a cup at the top, while siphon-fed guns have a hose that pulls paint from a separate container. Pour the paint slowly, leaving space at the top to avoid overflow during operation.

Adjust spray controls: Most guns have controls for fluid flow, fan pattern (horizontal or vertical), and air pressure. Start with minimal fluid flow and air pressure, gradually increasing them until you achieve the desired spray pattern and coverage.

Spraying Technique

Practice on scrap material: Before tackling your project, get a feel for the gun on a scrap piece of wood or cardboard. This allows you to adjust the settings and practice your spraying technique.

Maintain proper distance: Hold the gun approximately 6-8 inches from the surface you're spraying. Standing too close can lead to drips and uneven coverage, while standing too far can result in a weak, spattered finish.

Trigger control: Use smooth, consistent trigger pulls to avoid surges of paint. Start spraying slightly off the edge of your project and sweep the gun across the surface, overlapping slightly with each pass. Release the trigger just as you move off the edge to prevent drips.

Multiple coats: For optimal coverage, apply thin, even coats, allowing each layer to dry completely before applying the next.
