Get The Best Results From Your Auto Spray Gun

Anyone can get professional-looking results to using an auto spray gun. Whether you're painting an entire car or just touching up some scratches, following these tips will help you get the most out of your spray gun.

Choose The Right Spray Gun

Not all spray guns are created equal when it comes to the world of automotive painting. There are three main types of auto spray guns: HVLP (high volume, low pressure), LVLP (low volume, low pressure), and high pressure spray guns. LVLP guns use even lower air pressure for better control and are good for detail work. High pressure guns work at higher pressures and are best for applying heavy coatings quickly.

For most applications, a HVLP spray gun is recommended. HVLP guns are designed to maximize the amount of paint that sticks to the car's surface while minimizing overspray, they allow for greater control and efficiency.

Look for a gun that is lightweight and comfortable in your hands. You'll be holding it for long periods of time during the painting process. The trigger should have adjustable sensitivity so you can customize the paint flow. Many HVLP spray guns also allow you to change the shape of the spray pattern from round to a wider fan. This comes in handy when painting large flat surfaces like car doors or hoods.

Select The Right Nozzle

One of the most important factors in achieving a flawless finish with an auto spray gun is using the proper nozzle and needle setup. The nozzle and needle control the shape, size, and flow pattern of the paint particles emitted from the gun. For painting automobile surfaces, a 1.3mm to 1.5mm nozzle is recommended. This will produce a wider fan pattern that can cover large areas efficiently.

You'll also want to choose a corresponding needle size so that the nozzle and needle are balanced. Mismatched nozzle and needle sizes can lead to uneven flow and sputtering. An automotive paint gun kit will typically include a few nozzle and needle size options to suit different applications.

Maintain Correct Distance And Angle

Two key spraying techniques are maintaining the correct distance from the surface, and keeping the gun at a perpendicular angle to the car's body panels. Holding the spray gun too close or too far away can affect the paint dispersion and lead to an uneven coat. The same goes for angling the spray gun too sharply or gently - you want the paint particles to hit flush for best coverage.

Use even, sweeping arm movements and pay attention to keeping the spray gun at around 8 inches and 90 degrees as you move across the paint area. This takes some practice to master. Consider doing some test sprays on scrap metal to refine your technique before tackling your prized automobile.

Give Proper Curing Time

It can be time-saving to rush through paint jobs, but proper curing time is important for the paint to set correctly on automotive surfaces. The precise drying times will depend on the specific paint used - check guidelines to find the recommended cure times before sanding/polishing or applying new coats.

Rushing this curing step risks damaging the existing paint layers as you handle or spray the vehicle again too soon. Patience pays off with a hard, durable finish. Set up drying areas like a dust-free garage to protect the paint while curing. The time investment is well worth the long-lasting, professional results.
