If you're looking for a powerful, portable nail gun that fits comfortably in your hand, a palm nailer is a great option. While larger framing nailers require two hands to operate, palm nailers are lightweight and compact, designed to fit comfortably in your palm.

What is a Palm Nailer?

A palm nailer, is a small pneumatic nail gun designed to be held and operated with one hand. Palm nailers use compressed air to drive nails rapidly and accurately into wood, metal, plastic and other materials.

Palm nailers are designed for efficiency and portability. They are lightweight, usually about 2 pounds, and compact in size so they can be easily maneuvered into tight spaces. The nailer rests in the palm of the user's hand and has a short barrel, allowing the user to get close to the work surface for precision nailing. The trigger is conveniently located for easy one-handed operation.

Compared to larger nail guns, palm nailers are better suited for small jobs like woodworking, crafts, furniture assembly and finish carpentry. Their size allows for intricate nailing and access to confined areas. Many professional carpenters and woodworkers keep a palm nailer in their tool belt for detail work and finishing touches.

Benefits of Using a Palm Nailer

There are several key advantages that make palm nailers a useful addition for do-it-yourselfers, contractors, and professional carpenters.

Single-Shot Function. Drives one nail per trigger pull for precision placement, prevents accidental rapid fire.

Reduced fatigue. Weighing only 2-3 pounds, palm nailers are extremely lightweight and designed to fit comfortably in your hand. This reduces fatigue from extended overhead nailing or using heavy coil roofing nailers.

Excellent maneuverability. The compact size allows you to get into tight spaces and awkward angles that would be difficult with larger nail gun models. This makes them ideal for nailing studs when framing walls.

Increased safety. Modern palm nailers have multiple contact trip mechanisms to prevent accidental firing. Some also have adjustable depth controls to prevent over-driving nails.

Low maintenance. Palm nailers are fairly simple tools with fewer moving parts than framing or finish nailers. Provided you keep them properly lubricated and store them correctly, they require little maintenance.

Proper Use Techniques

Always wear safety glasses when using a palm nailer to protect your eyes from nail splatter. Heavy work gloves will guard your hands from accidental firing.

Before use, lubricate the nailer with a few drops of pneumatic tool oil according to manufacturer directions. This prevents jamming and maintains smooth operation.

To load the nailer, pull back the latch guard on the nose and insert a strip of nails until they click into place in the magazine. Release the latch guard to hold the nails securely.

Position the nailer straight against the workpiece, keeping your index finger off the trigger until ready to drive a nail. Squeezing the trigger fires a single nail with each pull. Allow the nailer to recoil gently after each nail is driven.

For precise nailing, use light, smooth strokes. Don't force or pound the nailer against the workpiece. Let the nailer do the work.

Be aware of bump firing, which happens when the nose safety disengages on contact and fires a nail unintentionally. Keep the nailer square to the workpiece and your fingers away from the trigger when re-positioning.

Adjust the depth control dial to set nail depth and prevent over-driving, test on a scrap piece first to check desired depth.
