Select an Appropriate Air Compressor

An impact wrench needs a sufficient air supply to generate its high torque output. For most 1-inch drive models, an air compressor that provides at least 5-8 HP at 90 PSI is recommended. This amount of airflow will enable the wrench to deliver its full rated power. Using a smaller air compressor can cause a loss of torque and prevent the tool from working effectively.

Applying Penetrating Fluid

If dealing with stubborn, frozen or over-torqued bolts, spray them liberally with penetrating fluid before attempting to loosen with your impact wrench. Let it soak in for 5-10 minutes. The fluid will work its way into threads and crevices, helping break down rust and corrosion so the bolts release easier. Reapply if needed.

Positioning at Proper Angle

For maximum impact, you want to position the wrench head squarely on the bolt or nut without slipping off. Angling it slightly so the impacting hammer contacts the sides rather than the top surface can help prevent cam-out where it loses grip and spins without loosening. Apply firm inward pressure when impacting to keep the socket firmly engaged.

Start Off Slowly

Resist the temptation to start hammering away full power right off the bat. Build up speed gradually, starting with a lower torque setting if available. Let the impacts provide an initial breakaway then increase force if needed. This prevents overstressing the bolt at the outset or damaging the threads. Sudden hammering at max torque is more likely to damage bolts.

Add a Reaction Arm

A 1-inch impact can generate tremendous twisting force. For automotive wheel lug nuts, use a sturdy reaction arm brace against the wheel to counteract the wrench's torque. This prevents damage to the wheel and suspension components.

Give Tool a Rest

After prolonged use, give your impact wrench time to cool down before continuing operation. This helps prevent internal damage from overheating. If it becomes too hot to comfortably hold, take a 15 minute break. The rest period will extend your tool's lifespan.

Out, Don't Round Off

One downside of high torque impacting is the risk of rounding off worn or damaged bolt heads. At the first sign of the socket starting to slip out of the bolt recess, stop impacting to avoid rounding it off. Switch to a six or twelve-point socket that can grip flats rather than corners. If too far gone, use a locking plier tool to back it out.

Check Your Work

Impact wrenches can also loosen stuck bolts so far they become damaged, so inspect threads and make sure the bolt is still reusable after removing it.
