Common Mistakes When Using An Impact Wrench

2024/02/28

An impact wrench is a powerful pneumatic tool that delivers high torque output in short bursts. Impact wrenches are commonly used in automotive repair shops and industrial settings for assembly, disassembly and tightening of bolts and nuts. However, if not used properly, they can cause damage or injury.

Choosing Too Large of a Tool

Do not using an overly powerful impact wrench on small bolts or fasteners. Just because you have a 1/2 inch drive tool capable of generating up to 1000 ft-lbs of torque does not mean you should be using it on everything. The excessive torque can lead to stripping or breaking small bolts.

Select an impact wrench that matches the size of the bolts you are working on.  Only step up to a heavier 1 inch drive for lug nuts, suspension components, or other large fasteners. Matching the tool to the job will help prevent damage.

Not Using Sockets Properly

Impact wrench sockets are designed specifically to stand up to the forces exerted by these powerful tools. Regular chrome sockets can crack or shatter under the torque. Never use adapters like a universal joint or empty socket holder that can cause excessive flexing.

Additionally, make sure the socket is fitted snugly on the anvil. A loose fit transfers energy inefficiently and can cause damage to the anvil or socket. Remove impacts sockets by pulling straight off the anvil rather than rocking them off at an angle to prevent cracking.

Improper Fastener Fit

For the best energy transfer, make sure the impact socket fits the shape of the fastener properly. A 6-point socket on a 12-point bolt head results in uneven forces that round off edges. A metric socket on a fastener also fits loosely, leading to slippage and rounding.

The depth of the socket also needs to fit the length of the fastener. If the socket is too shallow, the end of the bolt bottoms out deforming the head. Too deep and the side wall of the socket imparts sideways forces that can damage the corners of the fastener.

Inadequate Lubrication

Impact wrenches create tremendous forces. Without proper lubrication, those forces get transferred directly as friction heat to the threads and bolts. That can lead to damage of the fasteners like stripping, thread rolling, or breaking. Always apply a medium strength thread locker to lubricate and protect the threads. For stuck bolts, penetrating oil beforehand helps avoid breakage.

Proper lubrication also protects the internal hammer and anvil mechanism of the tool. Regular oiling is required to prevent wear in the tight tolerances.

Continuing After the Bolt Breaks Free

The impacting force of the hammer mechanism is meant for breaking loose stuck fasteners, not powering it out. Once the resistance drops indicating the bolt is loose, immediately stop triggering the tool. Allowing it to continue impacting as the bolt spins freely will quickly damage the threads.

Listen for the change in sound indicating the bolt has broken free then promptly let off the trigger. Switching to a ratchet or breaker bar prevents damaging the loosened fastener.Reserve the impact wrench for specifically starting stuck bolts with shorter bursts.

Not Securing Workpiece

The high torque reaction of an impact wrench can cause sparking, spinout or damage if the workpiece is not properly secured. Immobilize large workpieces using vise clamps or chains. For smaller pieces, use a vise or clamps to hold the material steady. Use mounting bolts on machines to prevent rotation before applying final tightening torque. Taking steps to secure the workpiece prevents accidents and damage caused by unexpected movement during use.

Using On Soft Materials

Impact wrenches should never be used to tighten hardware into soft materials like wood or plastic. The hammering action can damage soft materials and overdrive fasteners leading to stripping. Use hand tools when working with soft materials. Limit impact wrench use to metal, concrete and other hard surfaces. This simple tip will prevent costly damage and wasted time extracting broken bolts.
