Whether you're revamping some furniture pieces or tackling a vehicle restoration job, using a paint spray gun like the pros produces beautiful results. HVLP spray guns operate at lower air pressures, reduce overspray and making them more forgiving for new users.

Adjusting Settings

With a clean, prepped spray gun, it's time to adjust the various settings to suit your specific paint and project needs. Take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with what each knob and valve controls.

The fluid adjustment knob controls the volume of paint flow through the nozzle. Start with this knob just barely open and slowly increase paint flow until you achieve the desired spray pattern density.

The fan adjustment controls the shape and dispersion of the spray pattern, turning adjusting knob to the right until tight will make spray pattern round, or turning left make spray pattern ellipse.

Finally, the air pressure valve manages the air volume and force traveling through the gun. Higher pressure creates a finer mist for thin paint while lower pressure pushes out thicker coats.

Make small adjustments, do test sprays on a scrap surface, then tweak settings as needed until you've dialed in that perfect spray distribution.

Proper Spraying Technique  

Position the spray gun perpendicular to the surface, maintaining a consistent distance as you move. Start passing the spray before and finish after the object to avoid uneven lap marks. Keep the spray gun moving in one straight line horizontally or vertically for best results, overlapping each pass by about a third.

Start each pass with a full trigger pull, release and allow the gun to clear itself before beginning your stroke. This ensures you are spraying at full pressure right from the start.

For broad, wide surfaces like furniture or cabinetry, use wider sweeping horizontal strokes. Vertical strokes work better on upright surfaces like doors to limit drips and sagging.

Pros recommend applying a few lighter, thinner coats rather than trying to lay down a heavy, thick coating in one pass. Not only does this produce a smoother finish, it also avoids the dreaded runs and sags that can quickly ruin all your spray efforts.  

Allow each thin coat to become tack dry before adding the next slightly overlapping layer. Follow the specified recoat time for your specific coating, but generally plan for around a 20-30 minute dry time between coats when spraying indoors. Outdoors in warmer temperatures, this dry stage comes quicker.

Clean Your Spray Gun Properly After Each Use

The final key step that many sprayers neglect - thoroughly cleaning your spray gun immediately after each use. Leaving paint residue in the gun will dry out and clog everything up, making your expensive equipment useless. Getting into the habit of a diligent cleaning routine will extend the life of your spray equipment tremendously.

Empty out any residual paint from the fluid cup and rinse with an appropriate solvent for your coating material. Then run solvent through the nozzle and internal fluid passages to flush out any paint remnants.  

Use a brush to scrub away any dried paint buildup on removable components before reassembling. An ultrasonic cleaning bath can be useful for this degunking process as well. Store your disassembled spray gun in a moisture-free environment to keep corrosion at bay until next use.
